PREVENTATIVE CARE
Wellness exams help to establish a baseline of health for your pet and offer an early opportunity for detection and prevention of many diseases and health problems. We recommend that your pet receives at least an annual examination every year. Vaccinations, heart-worm testing and prevention, routine deworming, as well as flea and tick preventatives, are important components of wellness care and can prevent diseases that are not only life-threatening, but very expensive to treat.
Based on your pet’s age, risk factors, and lifestyle, Applebrook Inn Veterinary Center will work with you to create a recommend and custom vaccination schedule.

Puppy & Kitten Wellness
A long and healthy life starts with routine care. We recommend scheduling your first puppy or kitten exam as soon as possible to start creating a healthy relationship between you, your pet, and your veterinarian. Puppy and kitten vaccines start around 6-8 weeks of age, and until then he or she may be susceptible to many serious but preventable diseases. Your puppy will need to be tested and treated for parasites, which are extremely common in young dogs and can cause serious health issues for your pet or others in the household (particularly children!) if left untreated.
Adult Care
For average adult dogs, we consider Rabies and Distemper/Parvovirus/Adenovirus vaccinations to be core vaccinations (Rabies is required by Pennsylvania state law), as these are life threatening and incurable diseases. In addition, we highly recommend Bordatella, Leptospirosis, Canine Influenza, and Lyme disease vaccinations, as these are highly communicable diseases commonly found in our area.
For our feline companions, we consider Rabies and FVRCP (Feline panleukopenia, calicivirus, and herpesvirus) vaccinations to be core vaccinations (Rabies is required by Pennsylvania state law), as these are life threatening and incurable diseases. In addition, we highly recommend the feline leukemia vaccine annually for all indoor/outdoor cats.
Adult & Senior Wellness
Senior Care: In an otherwise healthy pet, we recommend starting annual senior blood work at 8 years of age, or 5 years in giant breeds, to help detect common ailments that may not show up
on a routine physical exam. Early diagnosis of such common diseases as kidney, liver, and thyroid, can allow for preventative measures to be taken, helping slow disease progression and alleviating long term cost and patient suffering.
